To get the most benefit out of the video lessons and truly grow as a musician, I suggest doing the following:
1. If they’re not already, number the measures in your music. I often refer to measure numbers in the videos so this will prevent you from getting lost.
2. Watch the Lesson portion while following along in your music. Feel free to pause, rewind, and skip around. Watch it as often as you’d like to understand the concepts thoroughly. Then you’ll be ready to try the music on your own.
3. Most videos feature a Guided Demonstration. This is for more complicated pieces where I run through the piece slowly while mentioning all the important concepts you might have missed. Do not watch/listen to this more than a few times; the key is to recognize and understand the concepts on your own.
4. The Demonstration portion is to be used only when necessary. Listen to it not to find the answers, but to confirm you’re playing the music right. Remember, the goal is to read/figure out the music on your own.
5. Some videos feature a Duet (play along!) portion. This is where we play along together. I play the duet part while you play the piece you’ve been working on. It can be frustrating if the piece isn’t perfect, so make sure you’ve really practiced before attempting this portion.
6. Videos that feature a Duet (play along!) portion also feature a Duet (both parts) portion that simply demonstrates what both parts of the duet sound like so that you know you’re doing it right.
Hope these suggestions help! Feel free to ask any questions you might have.
